Being At Home Within Yourself™
Women's Sacred Journey of Midlife E-Course
"You have found your way here, and it is no accident. You may not even know why you were drawn here, but here you are. And you are not alone.
When we take that step to seek answers to the questions that keep us up late at night and when we dare to slow our pace, we are given help, often in the most unexpected forms.
Enter this experience as a safe, sacred time for you---for deepening your relationship with yourself, for exploring those parts of yourself that have been stored in the secret recesses of your mind, heart and soul. This is for you. Welcome."
-Dr. Roxanne Howe-Murphy
An Introduction to this Course
You are joining with so many others who are entering into or are somewhere in the midst of a quest for a deeper connection to their own lives. I suspect that you are interested in this course because there is something 'tugging' at you—something that seems to be trying to get your attention. Perhaps there is a small inner voice which will not allow you to forget that it exists. By taking this step, you are saying "yes" to your quest.
Anytime any one of us takes the bold action to step back from the swirling activity of day-to-day living to listen to that inner voice, to examine what is going on in the deeper layers of life, to gain a broader perspective on one's experience, and to connect or reconnect with the inner truth, it is significant. It is impossible to create any meaningful change without this important act. So, it is my honor to share in this pivotal time with you.
You see, this quest is a responsibility that we each must accept if we are to continue growing, evolving and maturing into the fullness of our own lives. Sometimes, we are tempted to ignore the inner urging that we feel, or run in the opposite direction as quickly as possible. We might even consider trying to "hide" from it. But we do so at our own peril, for to deny ourselves this journey is to sabotage our normal, healthy development as an evolving adult. Yes, this inner journey is a vital part of your healthy development as an adult. If you stay with the journey, it will lead you into your authenticity and depth. Through this process, you can discover an inner strength, comfort and personal presence that you didn't know existed.
Avoiding the insistent inner urge comes at a high cost. Avoidance suppresses your vitality and joie de vivre, and ultimately, leads to a loss of connection with that which is truest and most precious within you. You are here for a reason. To miss out on recognizing your purpose leads to regrets later in life.
We all know people who have a vacancy in their eyes or seem resigned to life because "this is as good as it gets." These are signals of a quest that has been ignored. In the words of philosophers, poets and spiritual teachers, this is the "unexamined life."
I have clear memories from my early professional life teaching at the university. My impressions of a couple of older colleagues have stayed with me to this day. I noted how they walked across campus, hunched over, eyes to the ground. I sensed an air of resignation streaming from their bodies and I ached when they appeared to function with no sense of purpose or passion or direction.
This experience confirmed my earlier predisposition to question how it is that life works. I have come to recognize that this way of living is unnecessary. We are not intended to have a 'resigned,' passionless, or empty life. That's not why we are here. That's why I ache now when I sense the emptiness felt by others.
When we're in the midst of our hurried, stress-filled, and demanding lives, it can feel nearly impossible to step outside of that drama, to step off the 'merry-go-round' and find our way back into our own lives.
This e-course is intended to provide insights, perspectives, tools, inspiration, and practices to support you.
There are six sessions to this course. You will find that each begins with a quote; identifies some of the questions that other women in midlife have asked when exploring their own experience related to the topic of the session; provides a context/background for those questions; offers exercises or practices for experimenting with in daily life; and ends with key take-aways from the session. You are encouraged to get engaged with the material and notice what resonates most deeply with you, what supports you, and what difference it makes in your self-understanding and acceptance.
I recommend that you use a journal to write about your own experiences that the sessions bring up. There are numerous questions sprinkled throughout the sessions that invite you to write. If you have not already discovered this, I think you will find it makes a difference to actually write rather than trying to answer the questions "in your head." This will make even more sense to you later.
